Chinese firefighters saved a baby boy, believed to be a just a couple of days old, from a sewage pipe after he was flushed down the toilet.
Residents in an apartment building in Jinhua, in the wealth coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday afternoon reported hearing the sound of baby crying, state television reported on Monday, according to Daily Mail.
The firefighters, unable to pull the baby boy out of the sewage pipe were forced to saw through a section of the pipe to free the child.
Daily Mail reports that the firefighters removed the pipe and took it to a nearby hospital and there doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside.
The story has sparked anger in China with many taking to social media to demand that the child’s parents be “severely punished”, Metro UK reports.
Police are still searching for his mother and are treating the case as an attempted homicide.
There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned. The problem is attributed to a number of things: the country’s strict family planning rules, a greater value placed on baby boys over baby girls (which makes this story doubly bizarre) and young mothers sometimes being unaware that they are pregnant.
State television reported that the child rescued in Jinhua city is in “stable condition” and he has been named Baby No 59 after the number of his incubator.
